That Word Chat starts the year again days after the American Dialect Society selects its 2022 words of the year. We're again pulling together a panel of representatives from all the most prominent dictionaries and organizations that pick a word of the year.
What single word defined the past year in your mind? What words were coined or gained new meaning during 2022? We'll spend an hour on the topic with a panel of lexical stars: Ben Zimmer and Kelly Wright from American Dialect Society, Lynne Murphy of the University of Sussex, Peter Sokolowski from Merriam-Webster, Grammar Girl podcaster Mignon Fogarty, and Fiona McPherson of Oxford Languages, John Kelly from Dictionary.com, Mark Gwynn of the Australian National Dictionary Centre, and Wendalyn Nichols from Cambridge Dictionary.
Sign up below for the Zoom link to the live show, then join us at 4:30 p.m. ET (21:30 UTC) on Tuesday, January 10.
In the meantime, you can offer your own thoughts on the word of the year by participating in the American Dialect Society nomination process using a Google Form (deadline is 5 p.m. ET Dec. 28):
Among the members of the That Word Chat WOTY panel are, from top left: Fiona McPherson of Oxford Languages, Peter Sokolowski of Merriam-Webster, Kelly Wright and Ben Zimmer of the American Dialect Society, Mignon Fogarty of Quick and Dirty Tips, John Kelly from Dictionary.com, Lynne Murphy of the University of Sussex and Mark Gwynn of the Australian National Dictionary Centre.
