Episode 58: Joshua Blackburn
and 'League of the Lexicon'

November 1, 2022

Our annual games episode features a new game for lovers of all things lexical: League of the Lexicon. We'll test it in the room and talk to its creator, Joshua Blackburn, on the next episode of That Word Chat with Editor Mark Allen on Nov. 1.

Many of the game questions were supplied by what the creator describes as "a Who's Who of linguists and lexicographers," including some former guests ofThat Word Chat.

Blackburn is founder of Two Brothers Games and the creator of League of the Lexicon; but he says nothing in his CV suggests he would do either. He ran a design agency for 14 years, founded an art gallery for interior designers and had a photo book published about London launderettes called Launderama.

Then COVID happened. Looking for ways to inspire a love of language among his two boys, he began cooking up word games. A diversion turned into a hobby turned into a mission to create the definitive game about words and language. With help from linguists and lexicographers around the world, League of the Lexicon took shape. When it launched on Kickstarter, it became the most

successful word game in the platform's history.
