Linguist, lexicographer and newly minted doctor of philosophy Kelly Elizabeth Wright visits That Word Chat with Editor Mark Allen on September 6.

Wright, who recently added “Dr” to her pronouns (she/her/Dr), is an experimental sociolinguist specializing in linguistic discrimination and its institutional outcomes.

We plan to congratulate her on her doctorate and ask her about her latest research, which concerns perceptions of Black professionalism. Dr. Wright describes herself as a “Black Biracial cis woman, an Afrolachian raised in Knoxville, Tennessee” and a “scholar-activist, working for linguistic justice.”

Her previous research also includes a machine learning study of lexical racialization in sports journalism and an audit study of linguistic profiling in the housing market.
