Episode 53: The Zimmer Brothers

June 21, 2022

Ben Zimmer and Carl Zimmer, brothers from New Jersey, are leading journalists in the fields of linguistics and science. That Word Chat host Mark Allen once opined on Twitter that these are two of the people he'd most like to sit down for a beer with. Now we can.

The Brothers Zimmer will join the next That Word Chat, on June 21 at 4:30 p.m. EDT (20:30 UTC). You can sign up below.

Ben Zimmer is columnist for The Wall Street Journal and a contributing writer for The Atlantic. He is chair of the American Dialect Society's New Words Committee and vocabulary judge for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Carl Zimmer is a columnist for The New York Times and the author of 14 books about science, including Life's Edge: The Search for What it Means to be Alive and She Has Her Mother's Laugh.

Episode 54: Grammar Table II
July 12, 2022

Ellen Jovin returns to That Word Chat to talk about her new book, Rebel Without A Clause: Tales and Tips from a Roving Grammarian.

The book recounts her travels around the country to give free advice about grammar and listen to people's word-related concerns. It also is about connections and a common language in a pre-pandemic America facing political and social divisions.

We heard from Jovin and her husband, Brandt Johnson, in TWC Episode 5, when they were fresh from their journey. Jovin and Johnson are founders of Syntaxis, a communication skills training consultancy.

Jovin is the author of three other language-related books and she has studied 25 languages for fun.

Episode 54 of That Word Chat will be live on Zoom on July 12 at 4:30 p.m. EDT (20:30 UTC). You can sign up below.
