Upcoming webinar: The Latest in Style

3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (EST) Wednesday, October 10, 2018

At Mark Allen Editorial, we've got style. And, as with the language itself, that style changes all the time. In this 90-minute webinar on style guides, we'll talk about:

  • What's new in the AP Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style and, importantly, what recent changes mean for us as we consider the words we use in our own publications.
  • What the Chicago Manual of Style and the Associated Press Stylebook now say about use of the singular they.
  • The many advantages to online style guides — did you know you can customize them?
  • AP Stylebook’s extensive gender entry and what Chicago and others have to say about gender-sensitive language.
  • The importance of local style guides with some tips on how to create them.
  • How style guides and other reference sources can complement your house style guide and when you should go your own way.

Mark Allen has juggled style guides for 30 years as a copy editor, starting with the Associated Press Stylebook and, as a freelance editor, the Chicago Manual of Style, the Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association, local style guides, the style manual of the US Government Publishing Office, and the United Nations Editorial Manual.

One of those style guides (AP's) updates every year, usually with some significant changes. Chicago Manual of Style updates much less option, but it underwent a major update in the fall of 2017.

Mark has spoken about style guides for ACES: The Society for Editing, the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, Copyediting, Allstate, and the Twin Cities Professional Editors Network. Join him October 10 in an online webinar for $50 per person, which includes a Q&A period and a two-page handout of style guide updates.
